Necromancy!!!!!!!! Meh just throw a Ferox in.
If your going to use military force you ought to use overwhelming military force. All war is immoral and if you let that bother you your not a good soldier.

I really hope trans-dimensional construction will be possible. (Ima make a reTardis)

You could probably build a city inside a normal sized ship.

It all comes down to game mechanics. If fightes are advantageous,  then you want a massive heavily-armed carrier with fighter drones. I say dronerones, so that your pilots don't die when the fighters go splat.

Using drones instead of fighters (even if they're of lower quality) also gives the ability for a single human entity to command an entire squadron of fighters instead of just one. Game-programming wise, it's just adding a control block and then slaving the secondary drones' course and targeting to the leada fighter.

If engine / power / weapon requirements are such that small ships struggle to deal damage to larger ships, the question then becomes about turrets. If game mechanics don't actually favor fighters, a non-fighter ship will be significantly more effective. If secondary players can effectively man turrets, then that's what you want to do.

If, assuming capital ships sans fighters have the advantage, turrets can be automated to function as effectively (or nearly as effectively) as player-manned turrets, I would tell all my friends to get their own darned ships.  Meaning any passengers during a fight will be in the brig.
--Trespassers will be promptly riddled with bullets and other unpleasant projectiles.

--Survivors will treated with apologies, steak dinner, and a VIP tour of our facilities.

Actually...yeah. A souped-up (more planes) variety of a battlestar with heavy forward weapons. As far as carriers go, I think they did pretty good with it.

Edited the picture for you, heavier forward weapons.

It just looks more crisp and clean on my new 780 Ti.

I dig.

Sidebar: why did they make the flak actually screen, instead of just actually shooting it all at the incoming fighters? They shot a ridiculous number of rounds for them to just explode at an arbitrary distance. I get the "screen" concept and the theatric need for fighters,  it just seems that killing some bad guy fighters would be a more ideal way of holding them off.

It's hard to hit something that's moving however-many kilometers per second relative to you. In WWII, the bombers were all armed with turreted 30/50 cal guns (B17 had something like 8 turrets mounting ~12 guns), and flew in huge box formations (easily hundreds on some missions; possibly thousands on really big missions), and were still fairly easy targets for enemy fighters. Thus they usually had fighter escorts to really deal with the enemy fighters.
But you were dead a thousand times. Hopeless encounters successfully won. A man long dead, grafted to machines your builders did not understand. You follow the path, fitting into an infinite pattern. Yours to manipulate, to create and rebuild.

I know who you are.

You are destiny.

I think that the flak was more directed at the incoming missiles rather than the fighters, they had the Vipers to deal with the Raiders.

I had not considered this. Blocking incoming fire does seem to be a realistic and imperative goal. It'd still be cool to see some actual anti-fighter fire though.
