Its looking really good, how many fighters/bombers will it be able to store?

@ The Wolf: At present, i'm not certain, it depends on what designs I go with. I've got two fighter bays and a shuttle bay.

Because it's an escort carrier it will be fairly light on vehicles, compared to other carriers. Ideally I want 4 bombers, 8 fighters, 1 dropship/shuttle, and 2 interceptors. Each bomber would have two fighters for escort and the dropship would have two interceptors.

I'm having trouble getting a fighter/bomber design I like with the current tools. I think i'm going to wait for the custom geometry update before attempting anything that small. Though I have made some progress on the dropship.

So long, chumps!

Google ' Space Fighters ' (in image section) and search for inspiration

Thanks. I think right now my main problem is with how the fighters look made out of blocks. I think i'll wait on some of the custom geometry tools before attempting something that small. I just haven't been able to come up with a fighter design I like that also fully encloses the pilot.

well current fighters are what 10m long and more so it easy to make small ships, check my thread, althought at 10 blocks they ain't very pretty.

I thought I'd seen this before, but it must have been before it was reworked. Clicked not knowing what to expect.

Haha, thanks brother. I'll be sure to post when I finish the interior. I took about a few day hiatus.

I'll definitely give your thread a look. I'm trying to make fighters that can fully enclose the pilot. (leaving blocks open for where glass would go.) That's where my difficulty has come in creating something I like. I'm thinking about posting a competition for ideas and designs for my ship. I need fighters, bombers, and interceptors. Also taking ideas on shuttles and dropships. I'll post some specs.

Thanks again!

Nah you can't really build any decent small fighters. I tried many versions but if you want to include a pilot it just gets clunky.
Building some drones without any space dedicated to the pilot works much better but details are a problem.
I would wait for costum geometry before trying to build proper fighters.

Here some older pictures of drones I build:

Here some fighters:

Don't really like them. In such a small scale it's hard to add details.

Fighters aren't hard, you just have to think in terms of practicality rather than making it look like things you've seen in other sci-fi.

9x7x7, 6 shots, 24 propulsors.

The blank frames should be replaced by glass. It would be trivial to add more guns while keeping it under 10m.

no offense ment to you Crux, but that right there is exactly why we cannot build fighters at this point. If they are to even work they'll end up looking like something clunky space trash. This isn't a personal thing against your particular fighter... they all look terrible right now.

Well, mine was pretty much minimum size. A "fighter" is really a ship that docks inside a bigger one and doesn't contain life support sufficient for long term survival. We can make then pretty big and still have them work. Functionally, everything we build so far is pretty much a fighter. You don't get slick flat things like air fighters because in space that shape isn't really practical, and BR, for all its incompleteness, already represents that.

Thanks for the ideas. Like many have said, I think i'll wait for the custom geometry before trying to introduce fighter craft to my ship.

@crux: I do agree. Aerodynamics has little to do with space combat, and certainly isn't a necessary design element. However, with the possibility of exploring procedurally generated worlds the fighters I put on board my ship will likely be dual purpose: Both atmospheric and space capable. That, and I am absolutely biased towards sleek fighter craft. ;]

Actually it is quite important from a design stand point. I've already brought this up in another thread but I'll explain here aswell. From my point of view, it's quite important that a fast small craft looks like a small fast craft. Just because it wouldn't actually make sense to make such designs in space, doesn't mean it's not a good design visually. Seeing as we relate everything we see to stuff we already know, our brain automatically sees sleek streamlined designs as fast ships, where as big boxy things do not look as good. I honestly don't care what "makes sense in space" it's a game and things should look good.

And yea fighters could in theory be of any size, it's true... but I guess most of us like the idea of fighters emerging from other, larger ships, which somewhat limits their potential size.

Then, sir, our opinions on this matter are directly opposed.

Is there some upper limit on size for the bigger ships of which I'm not aware?

Maybe there is, I don't know. I was more refering to the size of ship being possible at the moment, due to having to do everything manually :)
