Start-up Crashes - 0.56
« on: April 24, 2012, 09:17:04 pm »
If the Blockade Runner indev 0.56 crashes on startup, please confirm the following first to help us diagnose the problem and resolve it once and for all!  Post here, e-mail us at support@zanmgt.com or PM my username.

Confirm:

Try the following:
  • Right-click BlockadeRunner.exe and run it with administrative privileges
  • Give the Blockade Runner folder read/write permissions
  • Add Blockade Runner to your firewall's exceptions

Report To Us (as many as you can):
  • The name of your videocard (Win7: Start > Dxdiag > Save All Information)
  • Version of Blockade Runner
  • Your version of Windows (Win7/XP, 32bit or 64bit)
  • Your processor type
  • The contents of log.txt in the Blockade Runner folder
  • The stack trace of the "Has stopped working" window
  • Did any previous version of BR run in the past?

If you happen to solve your crashing on start up let us know how you did it and we'll likely be able to reverse engineer where the problem started!

Sad to report it is still crashing for me.  :(

I need to get you guys a comprehensive run down and report at some point, but to be honest it just feels like too much trouble.

We have a new version with an extended log.txt we'd like for you to run!

http://files.zanmgt.com/BlockadeRunner0.56.0a.zip

All of the "powers of 2" textures have been corrected and so the older videocards in your PC's do not seem to be having a problem with those.  However once we get into the larger pack of textures (After Load#3) it's getting stopped again somewhere.

Edit:

DayShine's netbook stopped at #3.10, which is a small cluster of unused textures...

I'll get my brother to try it when he wakes up :)

(He's in China, so it's 5:00am there, haha)

Just tested BR on bro's older desktop here at home with 0.56.0a - the log.txt shows that his game gets to the same point before crashing in the log, i.e. 3.10 just like Cy83r.

However, he has an Aspire One netbook with him in China and it was also crashing on start-up - I'll get him to check where that stops using 0.56.0a when he wakes up, but I imagine it will be at the same point.

Kudos ZanMgt gents - you folks work fast :P :D

Just tested on bro's desktop now (for the record, it's always worked fine on my much newer Win7 machine).

SUCCESS! It works! Congrats and thanks a lot guys! Bro will be happy :)

It's really laggy with large items (anything Enormity Level 7 and up it starts to slow down quite a bit), but...

A. That's because this is quite an old machine (1.8ghz single-core, 1.5gbs RAM, 256mb ATI All-In-Wonder video card). He intends on getting a new computer when he gets back from China.

B. I imagine that because the game is in Alpha and is still in development, that you folks haven't done a great deal of in-depth optimizing yet :)

This at least means he should be able to tinker about on his free time and make fighter-sized / shuttle-sized craft on his netbook while he is over there!

Bro's awake - remoted into his netbook and tried BR - it gets much further, but gives a "Couldn't Initialize Render Targets" error, so I think it's just that we have older netbooks (pretty sure they have the Intel graphics chipset that came out before the GMA 3000 [or whatever it's called] chipset).

DayShine was on the IRC today and helped us to diagnose the crashes.  Unfortunately it turned out his Notebook's video card in the end couldn't run Blockade Runner, but I'm glad to hear that your PC ended up working!

And yes, there's a great deal that can be done for performance optimization, but we'll wait until it becomes a priority for everyone before we make that a focus.

EDIT:  We've updated the listed minimum requirements for BR to be the Intel GMA X3500 series, which according to their documentation supports multiple render targets.

UPDATE 1:

Final test version!

Thanks Aaron, I'll give it a whirl on my brother's old PC and my new one!

Also - no worries on the optimization, I figured as much, I understand and completely agree! :P

EDIT - For those looking for the 0.56.0d test version, Aaron's link above doesn't work - until Alaric or Aaron fix the link, the file is actually here :):

Aaron's Edit: The link has been corrected -- thank you!  :)

EDIT #2 - Haha...thanks Aaron....I just realized I forgot to correct your link in my own post XD

Sorry! :P
