Title: [Dev Asks] 64-bit only -- whatcha think?
Post by: Aaron on January 29, 2016, 04:29:03 pm
So yeah... we're mulling possibility of going 64-bit only.  According to the Steam Survey as of 1/29/2016, 32-bit is only used by 9% of Steam users.   Would Blockade Runner dropping support for 32bit PC's affect you?  Would it affect you two years from now?

Perspiring devs wanna know.  8)

I think my last 32 bit comp was in 2006...

It'd be nice to know exactly when 32-bit system were discontinued. If it's recent we can expect those 9% users to keep their machine for a few more years, if not it's safe to say the number will drop close to 0 before a full release.

A quick search seems to point at 2009-2010 for 64-bit becoming standard but I didn't find anything about 32-bit going off the shelves.

I'm pretty sure most, if not all of the big triple-A games to come out last year required a 64 bit OS. It's safe to say it's the norm now, and 32 bit will be completely phased out in 2 years. If you're still running a 32 bit OS, it's probably time to start thinking about an upgrade. I don't mean to sound like a PC elitist or anything, but that's just how it goes.

I would consider 32-bit support in the same vein as Windows XP support. Yes there will still be some holdouts, but it's time to move on. Especially if going 64-bit only lets you avoid some legacy cruft or helps make things more efficient.

There still is a 32-bit version of Win10, which makes me sad. But no, drop 32bit. Pretty much all CPU's made in the past, what, 8 years support 64bit and there is virtually no reason to not have switched over beyond grandparents not knowing what this 32/64 malarky is.

I believe only windows tablets still usually ship with 32bit versions simply because the tablets won't have much more than 2-3GB of RAM.

By the time BR is released, 32 bit won't exist. ;)

Don't waste the effort on it. As others have said, the industry as a whole has already mostly phased out 32 bit.

Do make sure you put the requirements above the download button, people are stupid and I can already hear that one guy with 32bit WinXP coming to complain.

32 bit is dead. New games require new computers. This would be no exception. Not like 64 bit has been out for years now. Thinking about all the computers I have built or looked at the last 6 years...all were 64bit hardware. Even Larry(40yr old computer illiterate friend). His old self has 64bit hardware...super slow and super old, but somehow 64bit.
